Rotarian of the Year - David Haas
by Pamela Lankford

2008-08-14
David Haas was recently recognized by Rotary District 6690 Governor Thomas Kokensparger when he attended the Marietta Morning Rotary’s meeting in July for the annual district governor’s visit.   Haas was named Rotarian of the Year by President Mark Studenic at the conclusion of his Presidential Year on June 27, 2008.

In awarding this honor to Haas, President Studenic explained that the criteria was linked to exemplary “Service above Self”, Rotary’s motto.  “David is a leader in the club and shows this through strong attendance and meeting or exceeding the club’s business plan goals.  He chaired the Rotary Foundation program and exceeded the club’s contribution goal.”

David was a charter member of the Marietta Morning Rotary when it was founded in 1991.  In his time as a Rotarian, he has always participated in the club’s community service and fundraising activities, and has taken on additional responsibilities in these events.  Behind the scenes he is often the first one there and the last to leave.

He is a Past President of the Marietta Morning Rotary Club as well as Past Assistant District Governor for Rotary district 6690, which encompasses the southeastern quadrant of Ohio.  He is vice president of Morrison Inc. and is involved with several other community organizations.  He and his wife, Leslie, and their daughter Reagan, reside in Marietta.

The Marietta Morning Rotary meets on Friday morning at 7:00 at the Marietta Country Club.  They are involved with several community and international service projects including the planting and maintenance of Discovery Garden at 7th and Pike Streets, the distribution of dictionaries to all third grade students in the Washington county, the sponsorship of the Marietta College Summer Reading Camp, improving the economic and cultural lives of the Ember Indians in Panama and host a International Dinner each spring.  For more information on the club or joining, www.mariettamorningrotary.com.

Panama Embera Project Underway
by Khadine Ritter

2008-05-21
The Marietta Morning Rotary Club has partnered with the Club Rotario Panama Sur in the Republic of Panama to build restrooms and septic facilities for the Embera Drua indian village along the Chagres River in Panama this summer.

Marietta club members will travel to Panama to build the sanitary stations alongside the Panamanian Rotarians and Embera villagers.  Currently, the village only has pit latrines.  The Embera are now in need of a more sanitary and efficient restroom facility in order to accomodate not only its residents but also the many tourists and visitors to the village.

The village sustains itself in large part from ecotourism and sales of their handcrafted artifacts.  The new restrooms and septic tanks will help them in their endeavor to promote tourism and, of course, sanitation.  The village numbers about 80 people.  You can learn more about the Embera Drua at www.trail2.comembera

Water and sanitation initiatives are some of Rotary International's loftiest agenda items.  The Marietta Morning Rotary Club is proud to participate in a project that will significantly improve the lives and health of this indigenous community in Panama.
