Reading Camp On
The Campus Of Marietta College

The Marietta Morning Rotary Club is proud to be a sponsor of the Marietta College Summer Reading Camp since 1997.

We've made the Camp one of our major community projects.

  • We conduct fundraising activities to provide scholarships for Reading Camp tuition; this assists disadvantaged children who have been recommended by their schools.
  • Rotary members contribute their time and talents as guest readers with groups of reading camp children. This is GREAT fun!
  • This activity lets us get the know the children, and give us the opportunity to take a break from our day, leave the office, pickup a book about who knows what, and read each page and show each illustration with an excitement that is truly not manufactured for the occasion.
  • As Rotary members, we also visit the Reading Camp to share our hobbies and interests so that we can provide the children with valuable background knowledge for literacy experiences.

What is the Summer Reading Camp?
The Summer Reading Camp is a four week program, cosponsored by Marietta College and the Marietta Morning Rotary Club, designed to assist students in the development of improved reading abilities and positive attitudes toward reading. This is accomplished through the integration of reading and writing activities using materials of interest to the child.

  • Each student's program is individually tailored to address needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Children's literature, computers, and hands-on experiences are used as primary instructional tools. Students work in a small group atmosphere with teachers who are preparing for licensing in the area of reading.
  • Camp is held on the Marietta College campus. At the conclusion of the summer reading camp, each student will receive a diagnostic report which will outline the student's reading strengths and weaknesses. This report will also provide suggestions for home and school activities to facilitate the student's growth as a reader.
